How can I eliminate a friend from my facebook?

There is this one acquaintance whom I once added as a friend. He's very rude though. Calling the president names I can't repeat. He also curses on occasion. I'm not sure why but his name as a friend keeps disappearing and reappearing on my profile. I'd like to get rid of him for good. How can I do this?
